These most recent illustration pieces come from my senior thesis project, which reinterprets man-made environmental disasters as the fallout from the activities of a hedonistic pantheon of deities.
Myths of antiquity often explain natural phenomena such as thunder and rainbows as literal acts of god. This project subverts this tradition, instead seeking to explain unnatural phenomena: man-made ecological crises of the past century such as oil spills, disappearing species, and the depletion of the ozone layer. The project also draws on the mythological tradition of creating anthropomorphized gods, beings capable of human emotions such as greed, envy, and vanity. Each piece depicts a deity who, driven by these selfish human vices, is responsible for an ecological crime.
